Upsells, combos, menu psychology, in-cart recommendations and limited-time items — practical ways to raise the average check without discounts.
Why discounts don’t work
A discount makes an order cheaper, not bigger. The guest ordered a burger for 80,000 UZS instead of 100,000 — you just lost 20,000 UZS of margin. The goal is to get guests to buy more, not to pay less.
8 techniques that work
- 1. Call center operator / cashier upsell: “Salsa sauce with your plov (5,000 UZS)?” +15–25% to the check.
- 2. Combo items on the menu: burger + fries + cola for 95,000 UZS vs. 110,000 UZS separately. The guest sees a deal; your margin stays stable.
- 3. “Frequently ordered together”: a drinks carousel under the pizza on your website. CTR on that carousel: 22–35%.
- 4. Limited-time items: “Today only — Truffle Mushroom pizza.” It creates urgency, and guests order right away.
- 5. A discount on the SECOND item, not the first: “Buy a pizza — get the second at half price.” Doubles the order.
- 6. Dessert after the main order is paid: “Add tiramisu? +18,000 UZS.” It doesn’t block the main order — just a sweet upsell at the end.
- 7. Larger size by default: in the size picker, Large comes first, not Small.
- 8. Menu psychology: put a premium item at the top of the list so everything else looks affordable next to it.
What results to expect
On Zoomda websites, adding “Frequently ordered together” plus combo items lifts the average check by 28% within 6 weeks. It’s not a one-time bump — it’s a lasting shift in guest behavior.
